Reading the overview on wine included in the brochure is not required to play VitiVini. However, we recommend that you read the overview and the information provided on each Fact Card. Both are significant learning tools that will be beneficial to playing VitiVini. The majority of the information on the Fact Cards and the questions on the Question Cards are covered within the overview. At the bottom of each Fact Card is a Challenge Question based on the information listed on that card. A Player Challenged by another Player for a Fact Card responds by reading the Challenge Question for that Fact Card. (See the Challenge Wild Card description in the Rules for Playing VitiVini section). Enjoy putting your newfound knowledge to the test!
VitiVini is played with:
Question Cards that have three questions on three difficulty levels (L1, L2, L3, from least difficult to most difficult)
Fact Cards with information from five Categories (Grapes, Regions, Wine Making, History, and Food Pairing)
Wild Cards that influence game play (Challenge, Confiscate, Return, Skip, Reverse, and Money)
Coins
A six-sided die, which is included for advanced play only. Two sides of the die show a 1, two show a 2, and two show a 3, so that Players can use it to randomly select the difficulty level of the questions that are asked from the Question Cards.
At the start of the game:
Players shuffle the Question Cards, which become the Question Card Deck
The Fact Cards and Wild Cards are shuffled together into another deck, the Fact Card Deck
The Coins are placed by the two decks and becomes the Bank
Before the game begins, each Player receives two cards from the Fact Card Deck and two coins from the Bank
Players then chose someone to pull the first Question Card. That Player then pulls a Question Card and asks the person immediately to their left to choose what level question they would like to answer (L1, L2, or L3). It is important to note that the person pulling the Question Card is not the first Player. The person immediately to their left who is answering the first question is the first Player.
The first Player and every Player thereafter will have five steps during their turn:
The Player draws one card from the Fact Card Deck and one Coin from the bank.
The Player chooses what level question they would like to answer (L1, L2, or L3) and attempts to answer the corresponding question when it is asked. Correct answers receive additional Cards from the Fact Card Deck and Coins from the Bank according to the structure below:
Correct answers to L1 questions receive one card and one coin.
Correct answers to L2 questions receive one card and two coins.
Correct answers to L3 questions receive two cards and two coins.
The Player can choose to play one Wild Card, if they hold one in their hand.
The Player can choose to use the Coins that they possess to purchase one or more of the Fact Cards that they hold in their hand from the Bank and place that Fact Card on the table as a Purchased Fact Card, which counts towards the winning portfolio that the Player is attempting to create. The Coin value (or cost) of each Fact Card is shown in the upper right hand corner of each Card as gold Coins.
The final act of a Player's turn is to pull a new Question Card for the next Player in rotation.
The first person to collect seven Purchased Fact Cards calls the end of the game and receives a three Coin bonus. As each Player tallies up the value of his or her Purchased Fact Cards and Coins, any Player with three Purchased Fact Cards from the same category also receives a two Coin bonus. Similarly, any Player with one Purchased Fact Card from each of the five different Categories also receives a two Coin bonus. The Player with the greatest Coin value – determined by the combination of the Coin value of all of their Purchased Fact Cards and their remaining Coins – is the winner!
Wild Cards:
Wild Cards do not have a Coin value and cannot be purchased. There are six types of Wild cards:
Challenge Cards: Challenge Cards allow you to challenge another Player for one of their non-purchased Fact Cards. The challenging Player selects a Player to challenge and one of the cards that that Player is holding. If the chosen card is a Fact Card, the challenger must answer the Challenge Question on the contested Fact Card correctly to take that card away. Fact Cards that are won through a Challenge Card do not need to be purchased from the Bank and are treated as Purchased Fact Cards. The acquiring Player is required to add that card to their Purchased Fact Cards. If the chosen card is a Wild Card and not a Fact Card, the challenger gets to take that Wild Card.
Confiscate Cards: Confiscate Cards allow you to take either one card from any Player or all the Coins held by any Player. If the card is a Purchased Fact Card rather than a Fact or Wild Card held in the chosen Player's hand, the acquiring Player does not have to repurchase the Card. However, the acquiring Player is required to add that card to their Purchased Fact Cards.
Return Cards: Return Cards allow you to remove one purchased Fact Card held by any Player and send it face down to the bottom of the Fact Card Deck.
Money Cards: Money Cards allow you to collect three additional Coins from the Bank.
Skip Cards: Skip Cards affect the next Player in the rotation, causing that Player to lose their turn.
Reverse Cards: Reverse Cards allow a Player to change the direction of the game. If the turn order is following left to right, it immediately switches right to left and vice versa. If there are only two Players, this card has the same effect as the Skip card.
General Rules of The Game:
1. The minimum number of Players for the game is 2, the maximum is 8.
2. All used or discarded Cards are returned to the bottom of their respective decks faced down.
3. Players are not required to play a Wild Card or purchase a Fact Card during their turn.
4. Players can only play one Wild Card per turn.
5. Players can purchase as many Fact Cards as they can afford.
6. Purchased Fact Cards must be shown face up on the table and, along with Coins, prominently displayed.
7. Purchased Fact Cards cannot be removed or replaced by a Player and are only affected by Confiscate or Return Wild Cards played by other Players.
8. At the end of each turn, a Player cannot hold more than 5 non-purchased Cards in their hand. Purchased Fact Cards do not count towards a Player's 5 Card limit. If not purchased or otherwise put into play, Players are required to discard excess cards from their hand, returning them to the bottom of the Fact Card Deck.
9. For Advanced Play, Players roll the Die to select which question to answer from the Question Cards. The Player being asked the question is the Player who rolls the Die.
